How much to fit internal doors?

This depends on a range of factors including the size of the door and the usual rate of the person charging for the service. You should expect anything between £40-70 for a door fitting. This should include the door being fully fitted along with handles and locks. Some services offer to take the old door for an extra charge so if this is something you think you would like then make sure to ask.

How to choose internal doors?

Deciding which internal door you should choose can be based on various different factors depending on your circumstances and aesthetic needs. Each type of internal door offers something different and here at Leader Doors we have a wide selection for you to choose from including:

How to choose internal doors

Finding the right internal door for you depends upon who lives in your home (you may need a fitting which is durable if you live with children or animals) and depends on the existing decor or aesthetic of your living space.

How wide are internal doors?

The standard internal door size in England and Wales is 1981 x 762 x 35 mm. This means that the width of an average UK internal door is 762mm (76.2cm/ 30 inches).

FUN FACT: Did you know that the average door size in Scotland is slightly narrower and is 726mm wide as well as usually being taller at 2040mm (2m!)

There are other variations of internal doors which are wider such as doors for wheelchair access which sit at 1981 x 838 x 35 mm.

How to treat internal pine doors

Pine is a softwood that has a naturally swirling grain that can be crafted to look sophisticated and contemporary within your home. When you purchase a pine door it is best to treat the fitting to ensure that it stays protected and stays in the best possible shape.

When your door is first delivered you should inspect it thoroughly. It is very rare for problems to occur but you should look out for any blemishes before treating it yourself. The packaging in which pine doors are shipped and transported in are usually sealed to stop any moisture from penetrating the untreated wood. If a door is exposed to moisture before it is treated then it could lead to the pine warping as it gradually dries.

Treating a pine door allows you to match it to the existing furniture in your home to create a sleek and consistent look. Try a hard wax oil to treat your pine door as this will provide a smooth feel to the surface and is effective at keeping moisture out whilst protecting the door over time.

  1. Remove the packaging from the door and make sure that there is no dust sitting on the door.
  2. Cover any glass with masking tape as you don’t want any spillages to stain the glass when you apply the treatment.
  3. Making sure that the oil is stirred before you start to apply it.
  4. Using a flat brush apply the oil evenly making sure that you follow the direction of the fibres.
  5. Make sure that you don’t apply the oil in an environment that is cooler than 5 degrees Celsius or in direct sunlight.
  6. Drying time will vary depending on the oil that you choose and can range from 3 hours up to 10 hours to dry. Make sure that you check the number of coats required on the manufacturer instructions as the number of coats will vary depending on the product and desired look that you want.
  7. Cover all areas of the door including inside lock cut-outs, behind hinges and along the sides, top and bottom. This will ensure that the door is protected from all angles and you won’t run into any issues.
  8. Once the door has completely dried then you can hang it into place.

What is an internal door?

An internal door is a door inside a home which separates and divides rooms and living spaces. They offer privacy and can be locked, keep in heat and provide some sound reduction. They are cheaper and easier to fit than external doors but they are also less durable and weaker.

They come in many different styles, materials and sizes to fit the needs of your interior space. Here at Leader Doors, we have hundreds of internal door designs for you to explore including bi-folding doors, coloured doors (with a rainbow of hues for you to choose from) and more.

What are internal doors made of?

There are many types of internal doors for you to choose from and each variation is made of slightly different properties depending on the manufacturer.

Solid Wood doors are crafted from a single piece of wood as you would imagine from the name and are often heavy fittings. They can be prone to cracking or warping over time due to their natural properties but offer a luxurious feel to your living space.

Engineered wood doors are usually crafted from MDF, laminated pieces of timber or chipboard and are often cheaper than solid wood doors. This is generally the standard for internal (and usually external) doors now in the UK and Europe. Engineered doors offer a better resistance to warping and bowing with frequent humidity changes.

What is a standard internal door size?

The standard size of an internal door is 1981mm x 762mm. This is 2ft 6 inches wide and 6ft 6 inches tall. Other size variations can be found but this is the most common size in England.

What colour should internal doors be?

It has been a debate for many years should your internal door be a feature that stands out or should it blend into the decor?

Hide and sleek

Having a door which seamlessly blends into the walls makes a room look bigger as it doesn’t chop up the wall space with a block colour. If your space is smaller then we recommend going for the sleek option as it will visually elongate your room.

Bright and bold

You may want to add personality to your room and you can achieve this by choosing an internal door colour that stands out but also complements the wall colour. It is important to consider the sitting of the door, if it is always partially open then you need to consider a colour which will look good on both sides in each room. Neutral tones such as white, beige and tan are colours which go well with light or dark walls.

The wonder of wallpaper

If your wallpaper in the room is bold and colourful then you should consider picking the dominant colour from the paper and matching the door to this as it will elevate the decor and create an aesthetic that is seamless and refined.

What is the most popular interior door style?

Panel doors are a common style of interior door that have been popular with homeowners for years and it looks like they are here to stay for some time. Panel doors are available in multiple styles, materials and colours for you to choose from and can create a sophisticated appeal to your living space.

In terms of the most popular door colour neutrals such as white and browns are commonly installed in homes. This is due to their versatility and the ability for them to match any decor.

What to know when buying internal doors?

There are 7 important things that you should consider when buying internal doors. If you know the answers to each of these 7 things then you are ready to find your new door and it will focus your choice towards a specific style, type or even brand.

Size – Measure the size that your internal door needs to be. This will give you the dimensions that you need in order to find your door.

Budget – How much are you willing to spend on a new interior door? If you set a budget range then this will give you options.

Purpose – What do you want from your door? Does it need to be hardwearing? If you live with children or animals you might want to consider an option which is durable. Or are you renting your property and don’t want to invest too much in a door that you may leave behind.

Style – Which style would you like to install into your living space? Are you looking for something with glass to add more natural light to the room?

Material – We sort of covered this one with the ‘how to choose internal doors section’. It is important to know what you are getting from each type of material. It also depends on the style that you are wanting to adopt and the purpose. So make sure you know the answers to both of those questions before deciding on material.

Decor – What is the existing decor of the space where the door will be installed? You want to ensure that the new door will match the aesthetic of the furniture. The last thing that you want is for it to look out of place.

Theme – Are you investing in a singular internal door or do you want a whole set of internal doors to place throughout your home? If you would like to explore the entire range of internal doors available here at Leader Doors you can do so and discover hundreds of designs which will give your home the update that it deserves.
